WHAT MAKES GLASS ARTISTS SPECIAL?
The glass artist loves to learn. Some begin with a course or two, some learn by experimenting, but their passion defines them. It drives them to learn more, to strive to be all that they can be. They are creative by nature, always hoping their next project will be their best. They learn through doing: try different ramp rates, change the soak times, try a new glass combination, change from foil to lead. They seek to find the magic that is hidden in each piece of glass. They try new techniques - glass painting, Cloisnne, screen printing, frit casting - always looking for new ways to beautify their work.
The glass artist is patient. Most are not inherently so, but the process teaches them that they must learn patience. Open the kiln too soon and the glass shatters under stress. Don't take enough time to clean the glass and the foil won't stick. Complicated processes may take three or four firings. It's hard to wait, but they learn that 'not to wait' can be disastrous.
The glass artists knows adversity: the wrong firing schedule ruins a customer's piece. The piece looks great, but the customer doesn't like the few bubbles in it. They are selected for that special show they've been dying to attend. Then high winds and rain knock down their tent; people fail to show up in sufficient quantities to make their entry fee. They find several high-priced products missing after the show is over. It's frustrating. Then there's the economy. Artists find it hard to put extra money to put into their hobby. Business profits have dwindled. They wonder if they can hang on. Is it worth it?
The glass artist is an optimist. The glass artist answers "yes" - it is worth it. The bad experiences are outweighed by the wonderful feeling of that special piece you just removed from the kiln, or that vibrant stained glass mural you and you alone created. You are the master of your fate, the captain of your soul. "Yes" - it is worth it.
I salute glass artists. These special pages are dedicated to them. Here they can display their wonderful talents. They can express their creativity for all the world to see. Here they become that gathering of fine artisans we call "glass artists". Live your dreams, search your souls for that new creation that will make you proud, and continue to inspire us by showing us what is possible.
